Mallory Kass at Scholastic has bought YA contemporary novel With Love & Mischief by Derek Milman. A southern transplant at a New England boarding school falls for a fellow rushee when both young men pledge the same elite Secret Society.

“Milman graces us with an action-packed thriller that’ll have you holding your breath as you flip each page.”

An earlier career as an actor and screenwriter helped shape Derek Milman’s debut novel, Scream All Night, a fast-paced and darkly comedic coming-of-age story that takes place on the set of a horror film.

Scream All Night is one of the most original YA contemporaries I have ever read. I really didn’t know what to expect going into this novel; for some reason, all the references to paranormal horror in the blurb had me thinking there were going to be paranormal elements to the story, and that they were going to be super-cheesy. Fortunately, that wasn’t the case. The categorisation of this novel as dark comedy works pretty well for me, because the writing finds humour in unexpected places, yet balances this humour with its darker exploration of abuse and neglect, which hit me hard with feelings.

On this episode of REALLY FAMOUS WRITERS, YA authors Derek Milman (SCREAM ALL NIGHT) and Lindsay Champion (SOMEDAY, SOMEWHERE) are delving into the secrets of their past. Lindsay ranks her top three celebrity interviews during her time as Features Editor at, Derek regales us with stories about being a sea captain and wunderkind paperboy, and they both reveal the biggest secret of all: their Uber ratings.

Is it too early for us to start getting excited about summer? We mean, we know it kind of JUST ended, but there are so many amazing books coming out NEXT summer that we can’t help it! But, fine, we understand. We’ll just get excited about summer books instead. And that’s something we think we can all get behind.
